I'm shopping for a motherboard for a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and keep running into boards covered in dragons, military-inspired patterns, oversized branding, and "GAMING" graphics. I'd really prefer a simple black motherboard without aggressive styling or distracting RGB. ASUS TUF designs in particular feel much louder than necessary. Are there any reasonably priced AM5 boards that have a cleaner, more understated look?

There are still some fairly restrained options. MSI’s PRO B850M-A WiFi and PRO B650M-A WiFi are relatively simple-looking, and Gigabyte’s B850M Gaming X is not especially flashy. ASUS’s ProArt line is another good place to look if you want a mostly black board with subtle gold accents. Just verify the BIOS version and AM5 support for the 9800X3D before buying.
The easiest solution is putting it in a case without a transparent side panel. Once the hardware is hidden, the motherboard’s appearance really doesn’t matter.
This styling trend has been around for a long time. Older boards often had bright green PCBs, neon slots, and equally questionable decoration, so today’s designs may actually be a little more restrained. Still, I’d rather see neutral hardware with optional lighting than huge logos and permanent gaming graphics.
The MSI X870E Gaming Plus WiFi is fairly understated compared with many other gaming boards, and its RGB can be disabled. Gigabyte’s X870 Aorus Elite and X870 Stealth models also keep the visual design relatively controlled, with the Stealth’s rear-facing connectors helping reduce visible cable clutter.
Creator and workstation boards usually avoid the exaggerated gaming aesthetic, although they can cost more. If you find the right board with only a few ugly plastic covers, plain black adhesive vinyl can work surprisingly well. Apply it carefully around seams and avoid covering anything that needs airflow or access.

That’s basically what I ended up doing: no lights and no window, just a plain case. I care more about knowing where everything goes than having perfect cable management or a beautiful PCB.
