I'm building my first PC in Canada and feeling overwhelmed after comparing parts in a store. My original build came to roughly $3,000, while my goal was to match or exceed PS5 performance for around $2,500. The store claimed they had experienced compatibility issues with the Corsair RAM I bought and recommended a different CPU, motherboard, and memory combination. They can take the RAM back and offered a bundle that would be about $90 cheaper than the listed online price. I also have the option to buy a used RTX 4070 for $600 CAD, but I'm unsure whether that is worthwhile. I'll mainly be gaming and would appreciate advice on which parts to keep, whether the Corsair RAM is actually a problem, and how to bring the total closer to budget.

You should be able to build something substantially faster than a PS5 for around $2,500 CAD. The Corsair RAM should be fine as long as it’s an appropriate DDR5 kit and passes memory testing; the store’s explanation about it not being tested isn’t, by itself, a compatibility problem. Check CPU, motherboard, and memory support together rather than replacing working parts automatically. For gaming, consider a Ryzen 7 7800X3D if the price is reasonable, and look into a Radeon RX 9070 XT. It generally offers excellent rasterized gaming performance and is a stronger gaming value than a standard RTX 5070, though Nvidia remains better for ray tracing, path tracing, upscaling, and frame generation. A less expensive quality 850W power supply, such as the Montech Century II, could also help reduce the total.
The Asus ROG STRIX B650-A Gaming WiFi is a reasonable alternative if it is priced close to the other B650 board. It offers strong features and wireless connectivity, but it won’t give a major gaming-performance advantage by itself. Choose based on price, rear I/O, Wi-Fi needs, and warranty rather than expecting the motherboard to improve frame rates.
A local retailer’s CPU, motherboard, and RAM bundles may be worth checking because they can lower the price considerably. Just compare the bundle’s exact parts and warranty against buying them separately. A used RTX 4070 for $600 CAD could work, but I’d only choose it if you’re comfortable with the card’s condition and warranty situation; a new RX 9070 XT would provide considerably more performance for a modern gaming-focused build.
I’m also using that Corsair memory without any compatibility problems. If the kit is on the motherboard’s supported list or runs at its rated settings after enabling the memory profile, there’s no obvious reason to exchange it.
