Why does my monitor switch to 4:3 when I use fullscreen?

My monitor's recommended resolution doesn't match its native resolution. I've already updated and reinstalled the graphics drivers, but the problem remains. Whenever I open a game or another application in fullscreen, my PC switches the display to a 4:3 aspect ratio. I'm trying to use 1920x1080. How can I make fullscreen applications keep the correct widescreen resolution?

If 1920x1080 is the monitor’s native resolution, check the display scaling settings in your graphics control panel. Set scaling to “Maintain aspect ratio” or “Scale full-screen,” depending on whether you want black bars or the image stretched. Also confirm that Windows is set to 1920x1080 at the monitor’s recommended refresh rate, and select 1920x1080 manually inside each game’s video settings.
