How Do I Stop Overthinking Projects and Just Start Building?

I'm studying computer science, but I keep getting stuck trying to choose the perfect project. I worry about whether an idea is useful, unique, impressive, or advanced enough, and I'm afraid of wasting time on something that won't matter. How can I pick something, start building, and focus on learning without constantly second-guessing myself?

Start with something useful or interesting to someone close to you. Ask what would make their life a little easier, then build the simplest version possible. A project doesn’t need to be revolutionary—the goal can simply be to practice planning, coding, debugging, and finishing.

The time you spend waiting for the perfect idea is still time spent not building. Pick a small project with a clear learning goal and treat it as practice rather than a portfolio masterpiece. You can always abandon it, improve it, or start something else once you learn more.

That’s the part I struggle with—I don’t know how to tell whether an idea is worth building. Should I stop trying to make it good and just choose something that teaches me a new skill?

This sounds partly like anxiety and perfectionism, not just a programming problem. Set a limited scope and a deadline, then give yourself permission to make something ordinary or messy. Finishing a small project will teach you more than endlessly evaluating ambitious ideas.
