My laptop is about four years old and still works well for everything I use it for, including Minecraft. The main issue is that it gets hot and the fans become extremely loud when running demanding programs. I have two cats, so I suspect dust and cat hair may be blocking the vents rather than the laptop being worn out. My family thinks its age means I should replace it, but I would rather clean and maintain it first. What should I try, and how can I make a reasonable case for keeping it?

Start by cleaning the vents and fans. Shut the laptop down, unplug it, and follow a teardown or cleaning guide for your exact model. If you use compressed air, hold the fan blades still instead of letting them spin freely. If you are nervous about opening it, a repair shop can usually clean it inexpensively. A four-year-old laptop does not automatically need replacing if it still meets your needs.
You could suggest a simple test to your family: let you clean the cooling system and monitor the temperatures, then reconsider replacement only if it still overheats or cannot handle your normal programs. That gives you a practical way to prove whether the problem is dirt rather than age. If they are offering a newer laptop anyway, keeping the old one as a backup is another reasonable option.
If cleaning does not solve the overheating, the thermal paste may have dried out and could need replacing. It is also worth checking temperatures, running a storage and memory test, and backing up anything important. An upgrade makes sense if the machine is failing or no longer performs well enough, not simply because it has reached a certain age.
I would clean it first before assuming it needs new thermal paste. Fans can run at full speed simply because dust is preventing the cooling system from working properly.
