I'm running an RTX 4070 with a Core i9-12900K, 32 GB of DDR5 memory, and a 1440p 240 Hz monitor. I play both AAA games and competitive titles, but my 4070 usually doesn't fully utilize the monitor's refresh rate except in lighter games. Everything remains playable, so I'm trying to figure out whether moving to an RTX 5080 would provide a meaningful improvement at 1440p or whether I should keep the 4070 or consider a CPU upgrade instead.

Ask whether the 4070 is actually preventing you from enjoying your games. If performance is already smooth and you’re satisfied with the image quality, keeping it is perfectly reasonable. Upgrade if you specifically want higher settings, more consistent high refresh rates, or better ray-tracing performance—and can comfortably afford the cost.
The RTX 5080 is roughly 66% faster and has more VRAM, so the upgrade is substantial on paper. At 1440p, you’ll notice it most in demanding AAA games and when using higher settings, ray tracing, or frame generation. Whether it’s worth the price depends on how much you value higher frame rates and whether the 4070 is currently holding you back.
The 5080 can be a noticeable step up, particularly on a 3440×1440 ultrawide or a 4K display. DLSS and multi-frame generation can also make demanding games feel much smoother, although native rendering with traditional anti-aliasing may still look preferable to some people. If you’re staying at standard 1440p, the improvement is real but less dramatic than it would be at higher resolutions.
I’m mainly interested in whether the difference will stand out on my 1440p monitor, since I’m not planning to move to 4K immediately.
For competitive games, your 12900K may be more of a limitation than the graphics card, especially if you’re chasing very high frame rates. A newer gaming-focused CPU could improve minimums and competitive performance, while the 5080 would have the bigger impact in visually demanding AAA games.
That’s what I’m trying to judge. The 4070 is still very good in lighter games, but it doesn’t reach the full refresh rate of my monitor in many of the more demanding titles.
