I have a nine-year-old Lenovo laptop and an Xfinity modem/router. My plan is supposed to provide 1 Gbps, and the provider says the router is receiving gigabit service, but speed tests on my laptop consistently show about 200 Mbps. The router is sitting right next to the laptop. Would an Ethernet cable likely get me closer to the advertised speed, or is the laptop's network hardware probably the limiting factor?

The laptop’s Wi-Fi adapter may be the bottleneck. A computer from that era might support only older 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, where real-world speeds around 200 Mbps are fairly normal even when the router has a much faster connection. Try a speed test on a newer phone or computer connected to the same network, preferably on the 5 GHz band, to compare.
Yes, testing with an Ethernet cable is the best first step. It removes most of the variables caused by Wi-Fi and will show whether the connection itself is fast enough. Just make sure the laptop has a gigabit Ethernet port; some older computers only have 100 Mbps ports, which would cap the result.
Check the units in the speed test. Internet providers advertise megabits per second, written Mbps, while file transfers often use megabytes per second, written MB/s. If the test really reports 200 Mbps, wired testing is worthwhile. If it reports 200 MB/s, that is already roughly 1,600 Mbps and would exceed a 1 Gbps plan.
A wired result is the clearest way to diagnose this. If Ethernet reaches close to 1 Gbps, the old laptop’s wireless adapter is responsible. If wired speeds are still low, then check the Ethernet port and cable, try another device, and contact the provider about the line or modem.
