I installed Linux Mint with KDE Plasma on my laptop about two days ago, and the battery health reading has fallen quickly—from around 60% to 40%, then 30%, and now 20%. The laptop is about 2–3 years old, and the battery only charges to roughly 96%. A KDE widget showed that the battery lasted over 40 minutes earlier, but only about 20 minutes later under similar conditions. Could Linux be damaging the battery, and is there any risk of it exploding?

You can try a calibration cycle: charge it fully, use it until the laptop shuts down from low battery, then charge it back to full. Repeat this only a couple of times, since regularly draining lithium batteries completely adds wear. If the reported capacity remains near 20% afterward, the battery is probably at the end of its service life rather than being damaged by Linux.
The widget is probably showing an estimate rather than a precise measurement. Battery runtime can also vary a lot with screen brightness, CPU usage, background processes, and power-management settings. Charging only to about 96% is not automatically a problem, but if the battery is swelling, getting unusually hot, or the case is lifting, stop using it and have it replaced.
Linux itself cannot make a battery physically degrade that quickly or cause it to explode. Those health percentages are often estimates based on the battery’s reported full-charge capacity, and they can change after switching operating systems or recalibrating. The battery may already be worn out, especially after 2–3 years. Check the laptop model and compare the design capacity with the current full-charge capacity using a battery-report tool or Linux power utility.
