Should I add more RAM or upgrade my CPU for 1440p gaming?

I'm trying to decide between upgrading my memory or processor. My current system has a Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB of RAM, and an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB. At 1440p, I mainly play CPU-heavy games such as racing titles and Flight Simulator 2024, and I'm concerned that my processor is limiting the graphics card. I could buy another 16GB module from the same brand and model for considerably less than a CPU upgrade, or I could replace the processor with a Ryzen 7 5700X. Would the extra memory help enough, or would upgrading the CPU provide a more noticeable improvement? Higher-end options such as X3D processors are currently unavailable or too expensive where I live.

For your stated games, I’d prioritize the CPU if the processor is consistently at or near full utilization while the GPU is underused. A 5700X can improve minimum frame rates and simulation performance over the 3600, though an X3D model would generally be preferable for gaming. If neither upgrade is urgent, waiting a month and comparing prices or benchmarks for your actual games is sensible rather than buying RAM or a CPU based only on the claimed bottleneck.

For gaming, a 5700X is not necessarily a major upgrade over the 3600 just because it has more cores. A Ryzen 5 5600 would provide a decent improvement for many games, while an X3D model would be the more substantial AM4 gaming upgrade, particularly for simulation and racing titles that benefit from extra cache. If those processors are unavailable or outside your budget, the 5700X is still a reasonable drop-in upgrade, but don’t expect it to transform every game.

Don’t assume the graphics card is heavily bottlenecked without checking GPU usage, CPU usage, frame times, and memory usage in the games you play. At 1440p, especially with demanding lighting settings, the GPU may still be the limiting component. 16GB can be enough for many games, but if your system is regularly running out of memory or paging to storage, moving to 32GB will help with stuttering and background applications. If the CPU is definitely limiting performance, an X3D chip would usually be a better gaming upgrade than a standard Ryzen 7, but only if one is available at a reasonable price.

If monitoring shows that you’re hitting the 16GB limit, adding memory is the cheaper and safer first step. Ideally, use a matched 2x16GB kit rather than mixing individual modules, even if they have the same specifications. More RAM won’t fix a CPU bottleneck, though; it mainly prevents swapping, hitching, and slowdowns when the game and other programs exceed available memory. Check your usage during the specific games before buying.
