I'm still using the Ryzen 7 1700 from my original build and feel it's becoming a major limitation. The system currently has 64GB of Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 memory, an RTX 3080 10GB, an 850W Thermaltake Toughpower GF A3 power supply, and an MSI B350M PRO-VDH Micro ATX AM4 motherboard.
I mainly use the computer for productivity tasks such as game development, video editing, and 3D work, but I also play games. I'd prefer to keep my existing 64GB of DDR4 rather than move to DDR5, since replacing the memory would be expensive and dropping below 64GB isn't practical for my workloads.
What would be the best DDR4-compatible CPU upgrade for this system? I'm considering processors such as the Ryzen 7 5700X, 5800X, 5800X3D, or Ryzen 9 5950X, but I'm unsure which offers the best balance of productivity performance, gaming, price, and power requirements. Would my current motherboard be suitable after a BIOS update, or should I replace it as well?

Another route is moving to an Intel LGA1700 DDR4 motherboard and using a processor such as the Core i5-13600K or a Core i7-14700-series chip. That can provide excellent productivity and gaming performance while letting you keep your existing memory, although you’d need a new motherboard and should compare the total platform cost against an AM4 upgrade.
If gaming performance is the priority, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the best AM4 choice and works with DDR4. It can still handle general productivity well, but it isn’t the best option for long all-core workloads. You’ll also want a capable CPU cooler and good airflow, especially with the 5800X3D or other higher-wattage processors.
For a mix of gaming and productivity, the Ryzen 7 5700X or 5800X is probably the best value. Either one would be a huge upgrade over the 1700, and the 5700X is usually easier to cool and cheaper. The 5800X3D is the strongest gaming-focused option on AM4, but it generally loses to the Ryzen 9 5950X in heavily threaded work. The 5950X makes the most sense if your editing, rendering, or development workloads can consistently use 16 cores.
Nearly any Ryzen 5000 processor would be a dramatic improvement over the Ryzen 7 1700. I’d avoid the Ryzen 5 5500 if you want the biggest platform upgrade, since it is much closer to older Ryzen 3000-level performance. For a straightforward, cost-effective upgrade, I’d choose the 5700X; for maximum productivity on AM4, the 5950X; and for maximum gaming performance, the 5800X3D.
Your B350 board may support Ryzen 5000 processors with the right BIOS, but I’d be cautious about pairing it with a high-power chip for long, sustained workloads. Its VRMs are fairly modest, so a 5950X or even a hot 5800X could place a lot of stress on the board. If you keep the motherboard, a 5700X is the safer upgrade. If you choose a higher-end CPU, consider a motherboard with stronger VRMs and make sure your BIOS supports the processor.

The 5700X and 5800X have become especially attractive when discounted. Eight modern cores should be plenty unless your productivity work regularly benefits from more than eight cores.
