Is This Camera and Microphone Extortion Email a Scam?

Don’t panic or engage with the sender. Search for a distinctive sentence from the email if you want reassurance—you’ll likely find that it’s a mass-mailed template. Also check whether the message mentions an old password; scammers often use passwords from previous data breaches to make the threat seem credible. That doesn’t mean they currently control your device.

A camera or microphone can theoretically be accessed by malware, but the email itself is not evidence that this happened. If they really had recordings, scammers often include a specific sample, though even that could be fabricated. Run a reputable malware scan, update your operating system and security software, and change important passwords from a trusted device. Turn on two-factor authentication where possible.

Keep the email as evidence if you want to report it, but don’t open attachments or follow links. Cover or disconnect cameras when you aren’t using them, and review which apps have camera and microphone permissions. If you already paid or shared account details, contact your payment provider and secure those accounts immediately.

This is a very common sextortion scam. The sender usually blasts the same threatening message to thousands of people and relies on panic to get payments. Since they provided no specific proof, there’s a strong chance they have nothing. Don’t reply, pay, or click anything in the email. Mark it as spam and delete it.
