I'm heading back to college for architecture, where I'll be doing a lot of 3D modeling, rendering, and other demanding work. The school expects students to provide their own desktop, so I want this system to last as long as reasonably possible.
The recommended specifications are a 12- to 16-core CPU such as an Intel Core Ultra 7 or Ryzen 7 9000-series processor, 32–64GB of DDR5 memory, a current mid-to-high-end graphics card with at least 12GB of VRAM, and a 1TB NVMe SSD. The dream build I'm considering is a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, X870E motherboard, 32GB of RAM, an RTX 5080 16GB, and a 1TB SSD, ideally with an all-white aesthetic.
Would it be smarter to build close to the school's recommendations and upgrade later, or is it worth spending significantly more on a dream PC now? I'm especially concerned about the hardware feeling outdated within a few years. I'd also like to know whether the X870E motherboard and 32GB of memory make sense for this kind of workload.

Before choosing parts, find out exactly which architecture and rendering programs your school uses. CPU and GPU performance can vary a lot between applications, so benchmarks for software such as your school’s modeling, rendering, and CAD tools will be more useful than simply buying the most expensive parts. Hardware will eventually age no matter what you buy, so matching the system to your actual workload is the best way to avoid overspending.
For rendering and other heavy workloads, I’d prioritize memory over a flashy motherboard. Thirty-two gigabytes may be enough to start, but 64GB is a safer baseline, and larger scenes or multitasking could eventually justify 96GB or 128GB. You can always upgrade the RAM later, but make sure the board has suitable DIMM support and buy a matched kit.
The 9950X3D and RTX 5080 would make a powerful system, but you probably don’t need an expensive X870E motherboard for a single graphics card and one SSD. A good B850, B650, X670, or reasonably priced X870E board should provide everything you need. Check the individual board’s expansion slots, USB4 support, and storage options instead of assuming the most expensive chipset is automatically better.
If you genuinely want the dream build and can comfortably afford it, there’s nothing wrong with going all out. Just avoid spending heavily on parts that don’t improve performance, particularly the motherboard. Put the budget toward the GPU, enough RAM, reliable storage, cooling, and a good power supply. Also consider adding more than a 1TB SSD if you’ll be keeping large project files and render assets locally.
Don’t forget the rest of the system. A high-end CPU and GPU can draw a lot of power, so budget for a quality power supply, strong cooling, and good airflow. The electricity cost and heat output are worth considering, especially if the computer will be rendering for long periods. Spending on white components and aesthetics is fine if that matters to you, but it won’t make the system last longer.

That’s helpful. I mainly liked the X870E because it felt more future-proof, but I’ll compare the actual connectivity and expansion features instead of just choosing it for the name.
