I want to build practical administration skills in Microsoft 365, especially Entra ID, Intune, SharePoint, Azure identity, and device management. My goal is to become comfortable working with these technologies in a real-world IT or sysadmin environment, but I'm hoping to avoid paying for a lab while I'm learning.
Microsoft Learn provides plenty of free theory and guided exercises, but realistic practice seems to require a Microsoft tenant, and many services become paid after trial periods. Is there still a free Microsoft 365 or Entra lab option available? Is the Microsoft 365 Developer Program still useful for learning Entra ID, Intune, and SharePoint, and what alternatives exist if I'm not eligible?
Would a trial tenant or a single Business Premium license be enough for hands-on practice? Can these technologies realistically be learned without paying, or should I expect to budget for a lab eventually? I'd also appreciate suggestions for a sensible learning order, free labs, Microsoft Learn paths, video walkthroughs, and home-lab setups. I'm mainly interested in actually practicing rather than only watching courses.

A completely free, unrestricted tenant is generally not available anymore. The Developer Program used to be the usual route, but access has become much more limited and often requires qualifying through other Microsoft programs. A Visual Studio subscription may provide developer benefits, but it can cost more than simply buying a single Microsoft 365 license.
For a practical lab, a short Microsoft 365 trial is a good starting point. You can create a separate test tenant, activate a trial such as Business Premium, and practice with Entra ID, Intune, and SharePoint. Be careful with renewal settings and cancel before the trial ends if you do not want charges. For longer-term access, one Business Premium seat is probably the best value, although it is not free.
You can learn the concepts through Microsoft Learn at no cost, but Intune in particular is much easier to understand when you have a device to enroll, configure, wipe, and troubleshoot. A spare laptop or a small virtualization server can make the exercises far more useful. You may also want a low-cost domain for testing custom domain configuration, though the tenant’s initial Microsoft domain is enough for many exercises.
The certification learning paths, especially the material for endpoint administration, are useful even when some examples are dated. Video lab demonstrations can fill in gaps when you do not have an active tenant.
If you cannot obtain a developer tenant, the realistic alternatives are a one-month trial, a single paid Business Premium license, or guided video labs. The trial can expose most of the features you need, while one paid license lets you keep a small personal learning tenant running. Free resources are enough for terminology and exam preparation, but sustained hands-on work usually involves at least a small cost.
I’d learn identity first: users, groups, authentication methods, roles, Conditional Access, and Zero Trust principles. Then move to Intune for enrollment, compliance policies, configuration profiles, application deployment, and device security. After that, study the broader Microsoft 365 administration features, followed by SharePoint permissions, sites, sharing, and governance.
This order helps because Entra ID is the foundation for access to the other services. Microsoft’s official learning paths combined with a temporary trial tenant and a spare test device can provide a solid starting point without immediately committing to a monthly subscription.
A trial tenant is still a reasonable way to get started, but I’d treat it as temporary and avoid putting any personal or production data in it. Document each exercise so you can rebuild the environment later.
