I'm planning to build a Microsoft 365 home lab to develop practical skills with Entra ID, Intune, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Teams, and Purview. I'd also like to synchronize it with a local home domain controller and connect it to an Azure Virtual Desktop environment using my student Azure credits.
The goal is to recreate as much of my workplace environment as possible, document the project over the next 18–24 months, and use it to move beyond basic desktop support into more advanced Microsoft 365 and Azure administration. I'm considering combining a Microsoft 365 Developer Program tenant with a Visual Studio Professional subscription, but the total cost could be around $1,200 per year.
Is this approach worthwhile, or would another licensing option provide a better training environment for less money? Are there important limitations, licensing details, or changes to the Developer Program that I should know about?

Check the current Microsoft 365 Developer Program terms before paying for anything. The program has changed over time, and access to a free developer tenant may depend on eligibility, ongoing development activity, and other requirements. It may not be intended as a permanent production tenant, so keep backups and avoid building anything you cannot afford to lose. A paid tenant can be more predictable, but it is still worth confirming exactly what the Visual Studio subscription provides and whether it covers the services and user count you need.
For the services you listed, Microsoft 365 Business Premium may be a much cheaper starting point. It includes core Entra ID and Intune capabilities, although you should compare the exact feature and licensing differences against the P1/P2 functionality you want to practice. A licensing comparison tool such as M365 Maps can make the differences easier to see. Also remember that a tenant built for learning may not need 25 paid users; you could often create a smaller test setup and add accounts only when a lab scenario requires them].
