My CPU temperature keeps climbing to around 99°C, and games become extremely laggy. Could the problem be old or dried-out thermal paste, a failing fan, dust buildup, poor cooler contact, or simply an older processor? I think the system has an older Intel Core i3 or i5, but I'm not sure. What information should I check, and what troubleshooting steps should I try first?

Start with the basics: shut the computer down, inspect the fans, clean out dust, and make sure the CPU cooler is firmly attached. If it’s an air cooler, confirm the fan spins normally. If it’s a liquid cooler, the pump may have failed or the radiator could be blocked. Don’t keep gaming at 99°C until you identify the cause.
Replacing the thermal paste may help if the cooler is old or was installed incorrectly, but CPU age by itself usually isn’t the reason for overheating. Remove the old paste carefully, apply a small amount of new paste, and reinstall the cooler with even pressure. Also check that the fan is connected to the correct motherboard header.
You’ll need to check whether it reaches 99°C while idle or only during games, then provide the exact CPU model, cooler type, and system specs. A temperature that high usually causes thermal throttling, which explains the lag. Common causes include a cooler that isn’t mounted correctly, a dead fan or pump, heavy dust, or dried-out thermal paste.
The troubleshooting advice depends heavily on the hardware. Post the exact processor, cooler, temperatures at idle and under load, and a description or photo of the inside of the case. Without that information, it’s impossible to tell whether the issue is paste, dust, fan failure, bad contact, or an undersized cooler.

I’m not even sure what cooler I have, so I’ll check inside the case and find the exact CPU model first.
