What 40–50-inch TV should I get for 4K PC gaming?

I recently bought my first gaming PC with a Ryzen 9 processor and an Nvidia RTX 5070. It runs my games well, but my old Insignia TV only supports 60Hz and doesn't make 1440p or 4K gaming look as sharp or smooth as I expected. I mainly play RPGs and other single-player games, with occasional casual online shooters. I'm looking for a 40–50-inch display around $500 that can deliver good image quality at 1440p or 4K and ideally 90–120Hz. What are the practical differences between using a gaming monitor and a TV, and do I need HDMI 2.1?

The biggest choice between a TV and monitor is usually your seating distance and preferred size. TVs are convenient for couch gaming and home entertainment, while monitors tend to offer more DisplayPort inputs, lower latency, easier desk use, and higher refresh rates. For your use case, a 4K TV running at 120Hz should be perfectly suitable. Just check independent reviews for gaming-mode input lag.

I'm about six feet away and currently use a TV around 45 inches, so that size works well. Since the PC is also our home entertainment system, I'll probably stay with a TV.

Look for a TV with a dedicated game mode, HDMI 2.1, variable refresh rate, and a real 120Hz panel rather than a marketing label based on motion smoothing. At your budget, a well-reviewed TCL or similar mini-LED set may offer better value than OLED. If you find an OLED or a discounted open-box model within budget, it will usually provide the most impressive picture. Your RTX 5070 should handle 1440p very comfortably and can use upscaling or frame generation when demanding games make native 4K difficult.

OLED TVs such as LG's C-series models are excellent for gaming because they combine very fast response times, low input lag, VRR, and 120Hz support. The tradeoffs compared with a monitor are fewer PC-focused features and sometimes having to turn the TV on or change inputs manually. For single-player games at a six-foot viewing distance, though, a 42- to 48-inch OLED can be a great couch-gaming display.

For 4K above 60Hz over HDMI, HDMI 2.1 is the important feature because it provides enough bandwidth for 4K at 120Hz or higher. An OLED gives you the best contrast, black levels, and overall picture quality. A 42-inch LG OLED is a popular choice for PC gaming, especially if you aren't primarily playing competitive shooters.

I mostly play RPGs and only occasionally play competitive games, so that sounds like a good fit. I'll look into the 42-inch OLED models.

TCL makes some good-value QLED and mini-LED models that can support 4K at 120Hz or 144Hz. They may not have OLED's perfect blacks, but they can be a better fit for a roughly $500 budget and are less vulnerable to burn-in. Burn-in is permanent image retention caused by static elements, such as desktop taskbars or HUDs, being displayed for very long periods. OLED is usually fine for mixed gaming and movie use, but it is worth considering if the display will show a desktop all day.

That makes sense. I hadn't heard of burn-in before, so a mini-LED or QLED model might be worth considering if OLED prices are too high.
