What Can I Do If Apple Denies a Refund for an Unexpected $180 Subscription Charge?

I started a free trial for an AI home-design app and was later charged $180 for the annual subscription. I didn't realize when the trial would end or when the full charge would be processed, and I forgot to cancel it in time. The charge also left my account restricted for nearly a month while I worked to cover the balance, and I need the money for food and bills.

Apple Support submitted a refund request, but it was denied. I submitted another request, and support said they added notes to my case. I previously received a refund for a much smaller purchase about a year and a half ago. If this second request is denied too, are there any legitimate options left, such as contacting the app developer or pursuing a consumer-protection or payment dispute? I'm looking for practical advice rather than criticism about forgetting to cancel.

If you believe the renewal terms were not clearly disclosed, save screenshots, receipts, and any trial or signup emails. Depending on where you live, you can ask a consumer-protection agency whether the disclosure met local requirements. A bank or card dispute should generally be reserved for an unauthorized or incorrectly processed charge; using it simply because a subscription was forgotten could result in account restrictions or other complications.

You can also ask Apple Support to explain the denial and request escalation through its formal billing channel, but there’s no guaranteed appeal beyond Apple’s review process. If the subscription is still active, cancel it immediately so there isn’t another renewal, and check whether the app has its own cancellation or refund policy.

Check your purchase history and subscription settings to confirm the exact trial end date, renewal terms, and charge. Apple’s refund system makes the final decision based on its policies, and support agents usually can’t guarantee an exception. If the second request is denied, contact the app developer through its official support page and explain that the renewal was unintended, although the developer may not be able to directly reverse an App Store charge.
