I've been hitting the memory limit on my computers over the past few months and have started noticing some slowdown. I know Windows can use a fair amount of memory for background services and bundled software. I already installed Zorin OS on my ThinkPad, but I'm wondering whether switching my prebuilt HP desktop to Linux would make a noticeable difference. Both systems have 16GB of RAM. How much improvement should I realistically expect?

Before changing operating systems, check what’s consuming the RAM and whether the system is using swap or the Windows pagefile. Modern browsers can use several gigabytes with lots of tabs, and background applications may also be responsible. If you’re constantly under memory pressure, adding RAM could help more than switching to Linux. Also, Linux uses otherwise-unused RAM for caching, so high reported usage isn’t automatically a problem.
Linux will usually use less RAM than Windows, but the exact difference depends heavily on the distribution and desktop environment. A lightweight option such as Linux Mint with Xfce should use less memory than heavier environments like GNOME or KDE, so it could feel a bit snappier on the HP. With 16GB, though, the improvement may not be dramatic unless you’re actually running out of memory.
A lightweight Linux installation can be surprisingly economical. On one 16GB system, a basic Xfce desktop may sit around 20% of RAM, and opening Firefox with a YouTube video might only raise that a little, depending on the number of tabs and extensions. Just remember that actual browser usage varies widely, so compare the same workload rather than comparing idle memory numbers alone.
