My current budget cannot stretch to 32GB, but I can afford either a single 16GB DDR5 module or a matched 2x8GB kit. I was considering buying one 16GB stick now and adding another identical stick later. I'm pairing the memory with an X3D processor, so I'm wondering whether the performance loss from running a single module would be relatively minor. Is it better to prioritize dual-channel memory now, or buy one larger module for an easier upgrade later?

Buying one 16GB stick now and adding another later can work, especially if both modules have the same specifications, but there is no guarantee they will use the same memory chips or behave identically. The exact model number helps, but different production batches can still create compatibility or stability issues.
I’d choose 2x8GB now and replace it with a matched 2x16GB kit when you can afford the upgrade. DDR5 generally prefers two modules over four, and combining separate modules later can make EXPO or higher memory speeds harder to stabilize. You could sell or reuse the original kit afterward.
That makes sense. I was mainly hoping to avoid replacing memory later, but stable dual-channel performance now may be worth more than having an easier upgrade path.
A matched 2x8GB kit will usually perform better immediately because it runs in dual channel. An X3D processor does not eliminate the bandwidth and latency penalties of single-channel memory. If 2x16GB is outside your budget, 2x8GB is the stronger short-term choice.

By different batches, I mean that the manufacturer may revise the memory chips or internal design while keeping the same advertised model. Two sticks bought months apart can therefore behave differently even if their labels match.
