Is a Loose USB 3.0 Micro-B Port on an External Hard Drive Normal?

My WD Elements external hard drive suddenly became difficult to connect. The USB 3.0 Micro-B plug would not click into place, and the socket now appears to sit deeper inside the plastic enclosure than it used to. When I unplug the cable, the female connector moves slightly with it. Is some movement normal for this type of enclosure, or is the USB port or its mounting likely damaged?

The worst case is that the enclosure’s USB interface stops working while the actual hard disk remains fine. You may be able to remove the disk and access it with a compatible SATA-to-USB adapter or dock, assuming this model uses a standard SATA drive and does not rely on hardware encryption. Check the exact model before opening it, and prioritize making a backup while the connection still works.

If the enclosure fails, would the disk normally be readable through a SATA-to-USB dock, or could the data be encrypted by the enclosure?

That sounds like the USB socket is coming loose from its mounting or from the drive’s internal board. It should not move noticeably when you insert or remove the cable. Avoid repeatedly plugging it in, because the connector or its solder joints could fail completely. If the drive still works, copy your important files to another device as soon as possible.

It was only bought about two years ago and I’ve always handled it carefully, so I didn’t expect the port to wear out this soon.
