Should I upgrade from a 3080 Ti to an RTX 5080 or wait for the 5090?

I was planning to build a completely new PC and keep my current system for projects and other uses. It still has an RTX 3080 Ti, but I'm considering upgrading because I game on a 4K HDR monitor. I could build the new system now with an RTX 5080, or wait until February or March next year for an RTX 5090. However, with the recent price increases, I'm unsure whether the 5090 would be worth the cost, especially if the next generation arrives in a couple of years. Would it make more sense to buy a 5080 now, wait for a 5090, or keep the 3080 Ti until the next major generation?

For gaming, the RTX 5090 is difficult to justify at its current price unless you specifically need the extra performance or plan to use it for demanding professional workloads. The 5080 is already a strong 4K card and should remain capable for the next few years. If you can find one at a reasonable price, it seems like the more balanced upgrade.

The 5090 may remain expensive even after newer cards arrive, so I wouldn’t wait solely because you expect a major price reduction. Compare real benchmarks for the games you play, check whether the 3080 Ti is actually limiting you, and then choose the card that fits your spending limit. A reasonably priced 5080 now is more sensible than stretching for a 5090 just because it is the top model.

I upgraded from a 3080 Ti to a 5080 and found it to be a worthwhile improvement for high-resolution gaming. I would not pay the premium for a 5090 unless having the fastest available card is important to you. If you do wait, set a definite stopping point—otherwise it is easy to keep delaying for the next launch or price drop.

I’d seriously consider keeping the 3080 Ti unless it is already failing to run the games you care about. It is still very capable at 4K, and graphics cards do not always become cheaper when the next generation launches—high-end models with lots of VRAM can retain their value. Waiting only makes sense if you have a firm time limit and are comfortable using the current card until then.

Exactly. There will always be another generation around the corner, so I’d base the decision on current game performance and your budget rather than trying to predict the perfect upgrade window.
