What kind of portfolio project should a new frontend engineer build?

I'm in my final semester of college and recently realized that I want to pursue frontend software engineering. I currently have two beginner projects and would like to build several stronger ones to showcase in my portfolio and add to my code repository. What kinds of projects would demonstrate useful frontend skills and make a good official portfolio? I'd especially appreciate suggestions for projects that go beyond basic tutorials and give me a chance to practice real-world development.

Try building something around an interesting public API. For example, make a polished dashboard, search tool, planner, or data explorer that consumes live data. A project with routing, loading and error states, responsive design, form handling, and thoughtful user experience will show much more than a couple of very basic demos. A frontend learning roadmap can also help you identify the skills and features to include.

That makes sense. Do my current projects seem good enough as a starting point, or should I replace them with more advanced ones right away?

Your existing projects are fine for showing that you’ve started learning, but they probably shouldn’t be the main focus of your portfolio. Keep improving them if they demonstrate something useful, then add one or two more substantial applications that feel like products someone might actually use. Focus on clean code, accessibility, mobile support, documentation, and explaining the decisions you made—not just on having a large number of projects.

Since you’re studying IT and moving toward software engineering, choose a project that solves a problem you understand personally. Build it from planning through deployment, include a clear README, and make the interface feel finished. A smaller, complete application with good structure is usually more convincing than many unfinished tutorial projects.
