I'm building a gaming PC with a Radeon 9070 XT, 32GB of DDR5 memory, 2TB of storage, an X870E motherboard, and a 1200W power supply. I'll mainly be playing at 2560×1440 and want a CPU that will avoid bottlenecks while offering good longevity. Should I choose the Ryzen 7 9850X3D or Ryzen 9 9950X3D? Is the Ryzen 9 worth the extra cost for gaming, or would the Ryzen 7 be the better choice?

For gaming only, I’d choose the Ryzen 7 9850X3D. It’s slightly faster in current gaming workloads, and there’s no clear reason to assume the Ryzen 9 will age better for games. At 1440p with a 9070 XT, the Ryzen 7 should be more than enough.
The 9850X3D should give you excellent gaming performance and smoother frame rates without paying for cores you probably won’t use. Your power supply and motherboard are already more than sufficient; the main question is whether you have productivity needs beyond gaming.
Unless you already have a high-end CPU, it would also help to compare against your current processor before upgrading. At 1440p, the graphics card is often the limiting component, so the upgrade may not change performance much if your existing CPU is already reasonably modern.
The Ryzen 9 9950X3D is the stronger all-around processor, but its extra cores mainly help with heavy productivity work. In gaming, performance should be very close to the Ryzen 7 9850X3D, so the Ryzen 7 is the better value unless you also render, compile, stream heavily, or run other demanding workloads.
If you want a Ryzen 9 for mixed use, consider a newer model that can make better use of both cache-equipped chiplets. Otherwise, the Ryzen 7 is all most gaming builds need right now.

The scheduling concern isn’t necessarily a deal-breaker. With the correct BIOS settings and current chipset software, the system can prioritize the cache-equipped chiplet for games. Even so, that doesn’t make the 9950X3D meaningfully faster for gaming.
