I'm the sole IT administrator for a mid-sized manufacturing company, and I've been dealing with recurring Windows problems even on relatively new computers. Systems become sluggish, and unwanted preinstalled apps seem to return after I remove them. I'm considering whether a broader move to Linux could improve things, but I'm concerned about the practical consequences. For anyone who has evaluated or carried out a Windows-to-Linux migration, what challenges did you encounter, and what made you decide to proceed or stay with Windows?

Linux is perfectly viable for some organizations, especially when most work happens in web applications and users mainly need a browser, shared files, and standard office tools. If you proceed, build consistent images and automate configuration and updates with proper management tools. Avoid assuming that a particular distribution will solve everything; choose it only after validating the applications, directory integration, policies, printers, and support model you actually need.
Before changing platforms, define exactly what “bloat” and “slow” mean in your environment. Measure CPU, memory, disk, startup time, and application performance, then identify which services or security tools are responsible. A clean Windows deployment with centralized management, restricted user permissions, policy controls, and scripted application installation may solve the underlying problem without retraining the entire company.
The biggest question is application compatibility. Manufacturing environments often depend on CAD/CAM, PLC and SCADA tools, ERP clients, label printers, USB license dongles, and vendor utilities that are Windows-only. Audit every application and peripheral before considering a migration. A browser-and-file-share user may be fine on Linux, while engineering, accounting, and shop-floor systems may need to remain on Windows.
Treat this as a business project rather than a personal preference. Estimate licensing, migration labor, training, support, hardware compatibility, backups, security management, and the cost of keeping Windows systems for exceptions. Users may strongly resist a new desktop, and vendors may blame Linux whenever something fails. A limited pilot with clear success criteria is safer than a company-wide switch based only on frustration with preinstalled software.
A hybrid rollout is much more realistic than replacing every endpoint at once. Pilot Linux with a small group of technically comfortable users whose work is mostly web-based, then compare support effort, performance, and productivity. Keep Windows for specialized applications and validated shop-floor machines. Linux can work well, but it trades familiar Windows administration problems for new identity, endpoint-management, software-packaging, printing, and support challenges.

That approach also gives users a chance to test the change before it affects everyone. The pilot should include file shares, printers, authentication, updates, remote support, and any business applications—not just whether the desktop feels familiar.
