I'm curious what would happen if someone tried to mix DDR4 and DDR5 memory. I'm using an AM5 processor and an 870E motherboard, and I know the combination isn't supported—but is it merely incompatible, or could it damage the RAM or motherboard?

You can’t install DDR4 in an AM5 motherboard at all. AM5 platforms use DDR5, and the modules have different notch positions, pin layouts, and electrical requirements. A DDR4 stick won’t fit into a DDR5 slot unless someone forces it, which could damage the module or the motherboard.
A few older Intel motherboards were made with separate DDR4 and DDR5 slots, but even those boards required you to choose one memory type or the other. They didn’t allow both types to be installed and used simultaneously. AM5 boards are generally DDR5-only, so that situation doesn’t apply here.
This is more than a case of unsupported memory settings—the hardware is physically incompatible. Don’t try to force a module into the slot, and don’t rely on an adapter to make it work. DDR4 and DDR5 use different signaling and memory architectures, so they can’t operate together in an AM5 system.
