Is This Ryzen 9 9950X Build a Good Balance for ML, Coding, and Gaming?

I'm an academic researcher and part-time gamer planning my first desktop build. My current MSI GF75 Thin 9SC, purchased in 2020, still works but is starting to feel dated. The new system will mainly be used for machine learning, AI research, coding, and general workstation tasks, with gaming as a secondary use.

I'm willing to give up some gaming performance if that makes the computer more useful for research and productivity. My proposed parts are:

- CPU: Ryzen 9 9950X — €295
- GPU: Acer Predator BiFrost RX 9070 XT White — €799.90
- Motherboard: ROG Strix X870E-H Gaming WiFi 7 — €247.99
- Memory: Crucial Pro 32 GB DDR5-6000 — €389.99
- SSD: Crucial E100 2 TB — €199.99
- Cooler: Thermalright Aqua Elite 360 V6 White — €47.07
- Power supply: MSI MAG A850GLS PCIe 5 — €94.95
- Case: MSI MAG PANO 130R PZ White — €64.96

Does this look like a sensible configuration? I'm especially interested in whether the Radeon GPU will be suitable for local AI workloads, whether the motherboard is unnecessarily expensive, and which components should be changed for better reliability or value.

The X870E board seems excessive unless you specifically need its additional connectivity, expansion slots, or storage support. A less expensive motherboard could provide the same practical performance, leaving more of the budget for better storage. I would also replace the Crucial E100—the endurance and overall quality are poor for a workstation that will handle lots of data and frequent writes.

I chose that board mainly for the extra NVMe and SATA options, since I expect to add storage over time. I’ll look for a better SSD, though—the E100 seems to be the weakest part of the list based on the feedback.

You may not need a 16-core CPU for normal coding and machine-learning tasks unless you’ll be running several virtual machines, containers, or heavily parallel workloads. A cheaper high-end processor such as the 270K+ could be enough. That said, if you really found the 9950X at €295, the price is unusually good, so keeping it can make sense if you value the extra cores. I’d also double-check the memory price, because €389.99 for 32 GB DDR5-6000 seems extremely high.

The processor price is a special deal, so I’m comfortable choosing the higher-end option at that cost. I’ll also recheck the memory pricing and put more attention into selecting a durable SSD.
