New 2.5-inch SATA SSD isn’t detected through my PCIe adapter

I previously received an 8TB server SSD, installed it in my desktop, and formatted it successfully. After about two years, that drive failed. I replaced it with a 4TB TeamGroup T-Force Vulcan Z SATA SSD and installed it in the exact same 2.5-inch dual-drive tray connected through a PCIe-to-SATA adapter, but Windows 11 does not detect it. My system has a Ryzen 7 5800X, 64GB of RAM, a 1TB SATA SSD, a 2TB NVMe drive, and a 250GB hard drive. The adapter has been unreliable in the past, so I'm also waiting for a normal SATA data-and-power cable. Is there anything else I should check, or is the new SSD possibly dead on arrival?

The exact PCIe slot where the old drive worked doesn’t prove the new drive or adapter is okay. The motherboard model matters because some slots share lanes or are disabled by certain NVMe or SATA configurations. Check whether the SSD is visible in BIOS first. If BIOS can’t see it, focus on the adapter, SATA cable, power, or the drive itself; if BIOS sees it but Windows doesn’t, use Disk Management and rescan disks.

I’m going to try the direct motherboard SATA connection first. The adapter has been temperamental before, so replacing that variable should make the diagnosis much easier.

The adapter and its power connection are the most likely problem, especially since you’ve had trouble with that cheap dual-drive PCIe tray before. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD needs both SATA data and SATA power; the PCIe adapter may only provide the data connection, depending on its design. Connect the SSD directly to a motherboard SATA port with a known-good SATA cable and power lead, then check BIOS/UEFI and Windows Disk Management. If it appears in Disk Management but has no usable volume, initialize it and create a partition. If it still doesn’t appear, test the SSD in another computer or with a USB-to-SATA adapter before declaring it dead.
