I'm building a PC with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and want to buy a new monitor. Should I choose a 1440p or 4K display? Can this system handle modern games at 4K, and would I generally need to use DLSS or lower some settings for demanding titles? I'm also wondering whether playing at 1440p on a 4K monitor looks worse than playing at 1440p on a native 1440p monitor. Upgrading to a higher-end graphics card such as an RTX 4090 or 5090 would be possible, but the cost is difficult to justify.

Yes, that setup is absolutely capable of 4K gaming. Most games should run well at high or ultra settings, although the most demanding titles may need DLSS, reduced ray tracing, or a few settings lowered to stay above 60 FPS. Path tracing is a different story and can heavily reduce performance even on much faster cards.
The RTX 5070 Ti pairs well with a 4K monitor because DLSS Quality or Balanced usually looks very close to native 4K while providing a large performance boost. In many games, 4K with DLSS will look sharper than rendering at 1440p, especially on a larger display. Frame generation can also help if you want higher refresh rates, though it works best when the base frame rate is already reasonable.
Running 1440p directly on a 4K monitor can look softer than native 1440p because the pixels do not scale evenly. A 1440p monitor is the cleaner choice if you plan to play at 1440p most of the time. That said, you can buy the 4K display and render games internally at a lower resolution using DLSS, which generally looks better than simply switching the whole monitor to 1440p.
The choice depends on your priorities.
