Is the Ryzen 7 7800X3D worth the extra cost over the Ryzen 5 9600X for 1080p gaming?

I'm putting together a 1080p gaming PC with a Ryzen 5 9600X, RTX 5070 12GB, Asus B850M Wi-Fi motherboard, 32GB of DDR5-6400 CL36 memory, a 1TB NVMe SSD, 360mm liquid cooler, 850W Gold PSU, and a Lian Li O11 Mini V2 case. I'll be using a 180Hz 1080p IPS monitor.

I've heard that 1080p gaming is more CPU-dependent, so I'm considering upgrading to a Ryzen 7 7800X3D. The extra cost is already significant, and I'm only a casual gamer who plays AAA single-player games and CS2 on weekends rather than competing professionally. Would the 7800X3D provide enough of a noticeable improvement to justify the price, or would the 9600X be the better value?

For casual gaming, the 9600X is already a very strong match for an RTX 5070. The 7800X3D is faster in some CPU-limited games, especially certain esports titles and games that benefit heavily from extra cache, but the difference varies by game. CS2 should easily exceed 180 FPS with either processor, so you probably won’t notice much practical benefit from the upgrade.

The 9600X also leaves you with a good upgrade path. You can use it now and replace the CPU later if your needs change or if a future AM5 processor offers a worthwhile improvement. For your current games and 180Hz display, spending less now is likely the more cost-effective choice.

I’d keep the 9600X and put the savings toward a better monitor, storage, or simply keep the money. A 1440p high-refresh display could make a more noticeable difference than moving from a 9600X to a 7800X3D, especially since you’re not playing competitively.

If you do choose an X3D processor, consider using a less expensive memory kit. The extra cache reduces the impact of slightly slower RAM, and DDR5-6000 with decent timings and EXPO is often a safer choice on AM5 than pushing 6400 MT/s. Running a 1:1 memory-controller ratio can work, but stability depends on the individual CPU and motherboard, so 6000 is usually the easier plug-and-play option.
