I'm a veterinarian in France, and a cat that was unfortunately killed by a car was brought to my clinic. The cat has no visible identification, but it is wearing an Apple AirTag on its collar. I'm not familiar with this technology. Is there a way to use the AirTag to identify or contact the owner, or leave them a message about where the cat is being cared for?

The owner might receive a location update showing that the AirTag is at a veterinary clinic and may contact you directly. However, there usually isn’t a straightforward way to obtain the owner’s identity from the tag unless it has Lost Mode contact details. If NFC scanning doesn’t work, the battery may be depleted, so official assistance may be necessary.
If the AirTag’s battery still works, use an iPhone or an Android phone with NFC enabled. Hold the white side of the tag against the back of the phone. A webpage should open with information about the tag, and if the owner marked it as lost, they may have provided a phone number or another way to contact them.
I managed to make it beep and found a serial number plus the last few digits of a phone number. I’ll try contacting Apple and provide my clinic’s contact information in case they can pass a message along.
