What’s the best way to build technical skills for internships?

I'm a sophomore who has started researching internships and improving my resume, but my technical experience is pretty limited. I'm comfortable with basic tools like Excel and Word, and I'd like to learn skills such as Python, SQL, R, or anything else that employers commonly expect. How should I prioritize what to learn, and what resources or projects would be good for building practical experience?

Start by checking several internship postings you’re interested in and look for skills that appear repeatedly. If Python and SQL show up often, focus on those first instead of trying to learn everything at once. After learning the basics, build a small project—such as analyzing a dataset or creating a simple database—to demonstrate that you can apply the skills.

Depending on the type of internship and your major, you may also benefit from learning Git, basic Linux command-line usage, and how to work with files and data. Compiled languages such as C++ or Rust can teach useful fundamentals, but they aren’t necessary for every career path. Match your learning plan to the jobs you actually want rather than collecting random technologies.
