I'm trying to install After Effects 4.1, released around 1999, on Windows 11. Near the end of setup, I receive an error saying that Sentinel failed. When I launch After Effects afterward, it reports that serialization failed, apparently because the Sentinel installation did not complete. I also tried enabling 32-bit application support using the instructions from a Windows support discussion, but that did not resolve the problem. Is there a way to get this version running, or would I need an older Windows environment?

The installer may include 16-bit components even though the main application is 32-bit. Modern 64-bit Windows cannot run 16-bit installers, so enabling general 32-bit support will not necessarily help. Sentinel may also be an old hardware-license system that installed a kernel-level driver or required a physical dongle, and those drivers are unlikely to work on Windows 11.
The most practical solution may be to install an older supported version of Windows in Hyper-V or another virtual machine. A Windows version from roughly the same era may be able to run the 16-bit installer and Sentinel components, though hardware-dongle support can still be difficult to configure inside a virtual machine.
You could check whether Sentinel depends on an older .NET Framework version. .NET Framework 3.5 includes .NET 2.0 and can usually be enabled through Windows Features or Apps and Features. That said, if the installer or licensing driver is 16-bit or otherwise incompatible with current Windows security requirements, installing .NET probably will not be enough.
