Can I convert my wired headset into a wireless Bluetooth headset?

A new Bluetooth version of the headset costs nearly €100 more than the wired model. Is there an adapter or small device I can connect to the headset so it communicates wirelessly with my computer over Bluetooth, essentially making the wired headset wireless?

If your headset uses USB rather than a 3.5 mm plug, compatibility is more complicated. A basic Bluetooth receiver generally cannot handle a USB headset directly, so you’d need a device specifically designed to support USB audio. For a normal analog headset, a small Bluetooth receiver is much easier and cheaper.

For gaming or calls, check the specifications carefully. Many inexpensive receivers only support headphone audio and either lack microphone support or use the receiver’s built-in microphone instead of the headset’s boom mic. Bluetooth can also introduce compression and noticeable delay, so look for a model with a suitable low-latency codec if that matters to you.

That makes sense. I was mainly thinking of using the headset for ordinary listening, so a little battery management and a short cable would probably be acceptable.

Yes, Bluetooth audio receivers can make a wired headset wireless. They usually connect to the headset through a 3.5 mm audio jack, pair with your computer, and run on their own battery. The downside is that you still have a short cable from the headset to the receiver, and you’ll need to recharge the receiver.

A Bluetooth receiver is the practical option for basic listening, but it won’t be exactly the same as buying a headset designed for wireless use. You may lose some audio quality, microphone functionality, or latency performance, and the receiver itself needs charging.
