How can I prepare for a Java data structures course in four weeks?

My previous school taught introductory programming in Python, but the program I'm transferring into teaches data structures in Java and expects students to have completed two semesters of Java. I have about four weeks to prepare.

I'm not especially worried about the underlying concepts—linked lists, trees, recursion, and similar structures work the same way conceptually. My concern is spending the semester struggling with Java syntax, type declarations, and library conventions while everyone else is focused on algorithm analysis and Big O. People keep telling me to build projects, but I'm looking for a more concrete study plan.

A practical plan is to take assignments or small programs you already completed in Python and reimplement them in Java. Since you already understand the solutions, you can concentrate on translation: class structure, static versus instance methods, declared types, loops, arrays, and Java’s collection APIs. After that, implement a linked list, stack, queue, binary search tree, and a few sorting or searching algorithms from scratch.

Four weeks is tight, but very manageable if you focus on the kind of Java you’ll need for coursework rather than trying to master the entire language. Practice writing classes, constructors, methods, arrays, generics, interfaces, exceptions, and basic input/output. Also spend time with the standard collections you’ll be expected to recognize, such as ArrayList, LinkedList, Stack or Deque, Queue, HashMap, and HashSet. The main challenge may be library conventions rather than syntax itself.

Get the syllabus or course materials for the first two semesters and use them to prioritize. Work through a beginner Java tutorial quickly, then solve small data-structure exercises in Java instead of watching more tutorials. A few introductory coding problems involving arrays, strings, linked lists, stacks, queues, and maps should give you useful repetition without becoming a massive side project.

The syntax differences probably won’t be the biggest obstacle. Most control flow will feel familiar coming from Python, and the important part is learning Java’s static typing, object model, generics, and standard library expectations. You can use documentation or a coding assistant to clarify syntax, but make sure you understand the resulting code instead of blindly copying it. Also, don’t assume that classmates who sound confident actually have a strong grasp of Big O.
