Nervous About Replacing Windows 11 With Fedora—How Should I Prepare?

I currently have Fedora and Windows 11 installed in a dual-boot setup, but Windows is still my primary operating system. I'm considering removing Windows and using Linux exclusively, but I'm worried about losing access to anything I still need. What's the safest way to test the switch and prepare before committing?

Before changing anything, make a complete image backup of your Windows drive and store it on an external disk. Also back up your personal files separately. With a verified backup, you can restore Windows later if you change your mind or something goes wrong.

The lowest-risk approach is to try Linux on a spare computer, even if it’s an inexpensive older machine. You can wipe and reinstall it freely without putting your current setup or important files at risk. It’s also completely fine to keep Windows if your work or particular applications require it.

There’s no need to treat this as an irreversible decision. Keep the dual-boot setup for now, make Fedora your default for daily use, and switch back to Windows whenever necessary. After some time, you’ll have a much better idea of whether removing it is actually worthwhile.

Don’t rush into deleting Windows. Use Fedora as your main system for a few weeks or months and keep Windows available while you figure out whether all your everyday software, games, and hardware work properly. You may find that you rarely need Windows once you get comfortable.

That was basically my experience. I started by using Linux on an older laptop, then moved it to my main computer after about six months. Eventually I stopped booting Windows because I didn’t need it anymore.
