Should I upgrade my AM4 system or save for an AM5 build?

I'm planning a PC upgrade and am unsure whether to maximize my current AM4 platform or save up for a full AM5 transition. My current system has an RTX 2060, Ryzen 7 2700X, 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4, and an MSI B450 Gaming Plus motherboard.

I was considering a Ryzen 7 5700X or 5800X, although the X3D models cost more than 500 AUD and are difficult to justify. I also noticed that the Intel Core i5-14600KF can outperform high-end AM4 gaming CPUs while supporting DDR4, which would let me reuse my existing memory. Since I would need a new motherboard for Intel anyway, I could buy a reasonably priced DDR4 board now and move to DDR5 later.

Would the 14600KF be a sensible choice despite the stability concerns surrounding 13th- and 14th-generation Intel desktop processors? Or would it be better to stay with AM4, perhaps upgrade to a 5700X or 5800X with a B550 board, and replace the RTX 2060 later? Alternatively, should I simply wait and save for AM5?

For a gaming-focused system, staying on AM4 is probably the simplest and best-value option. A Ryzen 5 5600 is good for a budget upgrade, while the Ryzen 7 5700X is a strong middle ground. Pair it with 32GB of DDR4 if your budget allows. Your RTX 2060 will likely remain the bigger limitation once you upgrade the CPU.

That makes sense. I’m planning to replace the RTX 2060 eventually, but I’d like to keep it as a backup for now.

The 14600KF can use DDR4, but you need a DDR4-compatible motherboard; DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable on the same board. It offers strong performance for the money, but it also means buying a new motherboard immediately. If you choose it, buy the processor new and use a board with up-to-date firmware and power settings to address the known 13th- and 14th-generation stability concerns.

That was my main attraction: keeping my existing DDR4 while getting stronger performance. I’d definitely buy the processor new if I went that route.

A Ryzen 7 5700X is a very sensible AM4 upgrade, especially if you can find one at a good price. Your B450 board may support it after a BIOS update, so check MSI’s CPU support list before buying. A B550 board is not strictly required, although it can provide newer features and PCIe 4.0. For a 5800X, make sure you also have a decent CPU cooler.

Would moving to a B550 board be worthwhile for a 5700X or 5800X, or should I just update the BIOS on my current board?

AM5 gives you the best future upgrade path, but the cost of a new motherboard and DDR5 memory can be hard to justify when your current platform still has good options. Unless you specifically need newer connectivity or plan to upgrade the CPU again soon, a 5700X plus a future GPU upgrade should give the system a lot more life. AM4 also only runs PCIe 3.0 on your board, but that usually is not a meaningful gaming problem with anything around an RTX 2060 or similar.
