I'm currently using a B350 motherboard with a Ryzen 7 1700 and a GTX 1060. I'm considering either upgrading the existing platform with a newer Ryzen 5000-series CPU, possibly moving to a B550 or X570 board, or rebuilding around AM5.
I'm hesitant about AM5 because DDR5 costs more and I'm not convinced the real-world gaming benefits justify the price. I also like the idea of reusing my DDR4, motherboard, and other existing parts so I can put more of the budget toward the graphics card. My main goal is a system that will remain useful for several years. Would it make more sense to maximize AM4 now, or start fresh with AM5?

Before buying anything, identify the exact B350 model and check its CPU support list and VRM limitations. Some B350 boards can run newer Ryzen chips after a BIOS update, while others may not be ideal for high-power processors. If the board supports a Ryzen 5000 chip, a BIOS update followed by a 5600-class or X3D upgrade is a very cost-effective route. If it doesn’t, then compare the total cost of a new AM4 board and CPU against an entry-level AM5 bundle rather than assuming X570 is the answer.
For a gaming-focused upgrade, keeping AM4 is probably the best value. First check whether your exact B350 board supports Ryzen 5000 and update the BIOS while the 1700 is still installed. A 5700X3D or another supported X3D chip paired with a strong GPU would be a huge jump from the current system. You may only need a bigger power supply, depending on the graphics card. There’s usually no reason to buy an expensive X570 board unless you specifically need its extra connectivity; a good B550 board is enough for most people.
Don’t choose based only on the advertised CAS latency. DDR5 kits can have higher latency numbers but substantially more bandwidth, and faster kits narrow the latency gap. For gaming, the CPU and graphics card matter more than the DDR4-versus-DDR5 label. That said, DDR5 pricing is a legitimate reason to stay on AM4 if you’re trying to maximize performance per dollar.
AM5 makes more sense if you have the budget and want the longest upgrade path. DDR5 isn’t only about latency or bandwidth—the main benefit is that current and future CPUs use the newer platform. Even a midrange AM5 CPU can outperform most older AM4 chips, while giving you room to upgrade later without replacing the motherboard and memory again. If you go this route, look at a B650 board and shop around for a CPU, motherboard, and memory bundle.
A sensible middle ground is to keep the existing motherboard, upgrade the BIOS, install the fastest reasonably priced compatible CPU, and spend the rest on the GPU. Your GTX 1060 is likely the biggest gaming limitation right now, so a modern graphics card will make a much larger difference than moving from DDR4 to DDR5 by itself. AM4 is already a mature platform, but a good X3D chip can still remain perfectly capable for several more years.

That was my initial thought too: keep the current platform for now and replace the motherboard later when I actually need a larger upgrade.
