I'm currently using a B350 motherboard with a Ryzen 7 1700 and a GTX 1060. I'm considering either upgrading the existing system with a newer Ryzen 5000-series processor, possibly alongside a B550 or X570 board, or starting fresh on AM5 with DDR5 memory. I'm not convinced DDR5 offers enough real-world benefit for my use, especially for competitive gaming, and DDR4 is cheaper and easier to reuse. However, I want the next system to remain useful for several years. Would it make more sense to maximize AM4, or should I invest in AM5 now?

If saving money matters more than having the newest platform, a strong AM4 build is still perfectly viable. A Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D, 32GB of DDR4-3200 or faster, and a good B550 board would be a substantial upgrade. X570 generally is not worth the extra cost unless you specifically need its additional connectivity, and you can reuse your existing case, storage, and possibly power supply. Just verify CPU support and motherboard power delivery before buying an X3D processor.
AM5 is the better choice if you have the budget and want the longest upgrade path. DDR5’s higher latency does not make it worse overall; newer processors are designed around its greater bandwidth, and the CPU performance difference is usually much more important than the memory timings. A reasonably priced B650 board and a mainstream processor can give you a current system with room for future CPU upgrades. Buying used memory or taking advantage of a bundle can help with the cost.
For a gaming-focused build, you may not need to replace the motherboard at all. Check the exact B350 model and its BIOS support, update the BIOS while the Ryzen 7 1700 is installed, and then consider a Ryzen 5 6000X3D, Ryzen 7 5700X3D, or another compatible X3D chip. Pair it with the best graphics card you can afford. You may need a stronger power supply, but this could provide a huge improvement for far less than a complete platform change.
That’s close to what I was considering. I may keep this system as long as possible and move to a newer platform later.
Before choosing a platform, identify what is limiting your games. If the graphics card is the main bottleneck, a CPU and GPU upgrade on your existing board may be the most sensible route. Even a less expensive Ryzen 5 5600 or Ryzen 5 5500X3D-class upgrade would be dramatically faster than the Ryzen 7 1700. If you are building from scratch and want several years of CPU upgrade options, choose AM5; if you want the biggest immediate improvement per dollar, stay with AM4.
A used-parts build can be very good value. I would be careful with listings, check the photos and descriptions closely, and prioritize sellers who provide clear information about the hardware.
