How Should I Choose Between Full-Stack Development, Cybersecurity, and Cloud DevOps?

I'm a second-year computer science student exploring possible career directions, including full-stack development, cybersecurity, cloud engineering, DevOps, and other areas. So far, I've learned Python and C/C++, and I've just started practicing easy data-structures-and-algorithms problems. I'm wondering whether I should choose one path now and spend the next two years focusing entirely on building a career in it. What would experienced developers recommend?

You’re only in your second year, so you don’t need to have your whole career mapped out yet. Try small projects in a few areas instead. For example, build a simple full-stack app, intentionally break parts of it, and then deploy it somewhere. That will give you a much better idea of which work you enjoy than choosing a label in advance. You have plenty of time to specialize later.

Full-stack development is probably the most practical starting point because it lets you build complete projects and understand how applications work. Cloud and DevOps positions often expect some production or deployment experience first. Build a few CRUD applications, use different databases, deploy them yourself, and then decide whether you enjoy the infrastructure side enough to move deeper into cloud or DevOps.

Look at hiring trends and job descriptions in your own country or region rather than relying only on broad internet predictions. Keep in mind that cybersecurity covers many different roles, and conditions can vary between them. Market demand and AI tools are changing quickly, so use that information as one input, but also pay attention to what kind of work you actually enjoy.

I wouldn’t lock yourself into one area for two full years yet. Build a small CRUD application first, since that will expose you to a frontend, backend, database, and deployment. After that, try a couple of different databases or deployment setups. DevOps and cloud work often become more interesting once you’ve experienced the frustration of deploying and maintaining applications yourself. Also, solving only a few DSA problems means you’re still at the beginning, so there’s no need to rush the decision.

Having everything figured out early is mostly a myth, especially in technology. Keep building projects and share your progress publicly so you can learn from the process. Consistency will reveal which direction suits you.

I’ve already made a few Python projects using PyQt5 and JSON, mostly on my own with occasional guidance from an AI tool. I’ve also been committing my work regularly, although I only know the basic Git commands so far.
