I have a GIGABYTE B850 GAMING WIFI6 motherboard with a GPU installed in the PCIe x16 slot. The three remaining physical slots are wired as PCIe x1, even though they are full-length slots. My motherboard also has three M.2 NVMe sockets: M2A_CPU is occupied by my SSD, while M2B_CPU and M2C_SB are available.
I want to install a capture card, but I'm unsure which connection makes the most sense. A PCIe x1 slot would limit me to a capture card designed for x1 bandwidth, while an M.2-to-PCIe adapter could provide more bandwidth through one of the unused M.2 slots. However, the adapter adds extra hardware, cost, and another possible point of failure.
I have also used a USB capture device before and experienced noticeable audio latency, so I would prefer an internal solution if possible. Should I use a PCIe x1 capture card, buy an M.2-to-PCIe adapter for a faster card, or reconsider USB?

The best choice depends mostly on the capture resolution and frame rate, not just whether the card is internal. Check the capture card’s required interface and sustained bandwidth first. If it is rated for PCIe x1 at your desired settings, use the motherboard slot and keep things simple; only use an M.2 adapter when the card genuinely needs x4 bandwidth.
USB-C capture devices are worth considering too. USB 3.2 Gen 2 provides up to 10 Gbps, which can be enough for many capture workloads, and this motherboard has compatible USB-C ports. However, latency and audio synchronization vary by device, so your previous experience may have been caused by the specific capture hardware, cables, drivers, or settings rather than USB as a whole.
An M.2-to-PCIe adapter is a reasonable option if you specifically want 4K capture or a card that needs an x4 connection. A PCIe Gen 3 or Gen 4 adapter should usually work fine at those speeds; just verify that the M.2 slot supports the required PCIe lanes and check the motherboard manual for lane sharing or disabled ports.
If you only need 1080p capture, a PCIe x1 card should generally be enough. There’s no need to complicate the setup with an adapter unless the capture card’s specifications actually require more bandwidth.

My previous USB capture device had very noticeable audio latency, which is why I was hoping an internal card would solve the problem. I’ll still investigate whether the issue was caused by that particular device or its cables.
