I'm building a new PC and comparing two processor bundles. The 9800X3D bundle costs a little over $200 more than the 7800X3D option. I'm using an RX 9070 XT and currently play at 1080p, although I want to upgrade to a 1440p monitor soon. Spending the extra money on the newer CPU would delay that monitor upgrade by a few weeks. Is the 9800X3D's performance difference large enough to justify the extra cost, or would the 7800X3D be the better-balanced choice? I recently upgraded from an RX 6600 XT, which is why I'm still using a 1080p display.

Go with the 7800X3D and put the extra money toward the 1440p monitor. The RX 9070 XT is much better suited to 1440p, and the monitor upgrade will be more noticeable than the CPU difference in this setup.
Check benchmarks for the games you actually play, but at 1440p the graphics card usually becomes the limiting factor sooner. A 7800X3D paired with the 9070 XT and a good 1440p display should provide a great experience. The 9800X3D can deliver higher CPU-limited frame rates, but most people won’t notice enough difference to justify delaying the monitor.
At a $200-plus premium, the 9800X3D generally isn’t worth it here, assuming the bundles are otherwise comparable. The 7800X3D is still an excellent gaming processor, runs efficiently, and doesn’t require an especially powerful cooler. The newer chip makes more sense if you’re targeting extremely high refresh rates or pairing it with a much faster graphics card.
The motherboard in the more expensive bundle is a somewhat better X870 model, but it still doesn’t seem like a major enough difference to give up the monitor upgrade.
