What gaming PC should I build with an $800–$1,000 budget?

I'm switching from Xbox to PC and have no experience building a computer. My budget is between $800 and $1,000 USD, and I'd like a system that can handle games such as Marvel Rivals, Minecraft, Elden Ring, and Fortnite at 1920×1080 resolution. Should I build it myself, buy a prebuilt, or follow a specific parts list?

Since you’re new to building, a prebuilt is a reasonable option. Warehouse clubs and major retailers sometimes offer good gaming desktops in this price range. Look for something with a modern Core i5 or Ryzen 5 processor, 16GB of memory, a 1TB SSD, and a dedicated graphics card around the RTX 5060 or similar performance level. Compare the individual parts and check the warranty before buying.

For 1080p gaming, a system with an RTX 5060-class GPU and a midrange processor should handle Fortnite and Minecraft easily and run games like Marvel Rivals and Elden Ring well with appropriate settings. A 1TB SSD is worth the extra money if you can stretch the budget, because 512GB fills up quickly.

At this budget, start by planning the parts with a compatibility tool such as PCPartPicker. Aim for at least 16GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD if possible, and prioritize the graphics card since it matters most for gaming performance. An AM4-based system can help keep costs down, although newer platforms may offer a better upgrade path. Detailed beginner build videos can also walk you through the entire assembly process.

You don’t need much equipment to assemble a PC—a basic Phillips-head screwdriver is usually enough. Take your time, follow a full build guide, and double-check motherboard, power supply, and graphics card compatibility. Building it yourself can save money, but a good prebuilt may be simpler if the price is close.
