Are Online Programming Certificates Actually Worth Getting?

I've been learning programming for quite a while and can already build projects. I keep seeing advertisements for free online courses that offer certificates of completion. Do these certificates help with getting hired, or would my time be better spent building projects and improving my practical skills?

Certifications can matter when they come from a recognized technology vendor and require passing a serious exam, such as AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Cisco, Microsoft, Oracle, or Red Hat. Those can be useful for cloud, networking, security, or enterprise roles, but they’re often expensive and generally aren’t required for entry-level programming jobs.

Even with an industry certification, the knowledge and preparation are usually more valuable than the document itself. If possible, it’s worth seeing whether an employer will pay for the exam.

Most certificates from general online courses are really just proof that you completed the material. They usually don’t demonstrate that you can do the work, so employers tend to value real projects, problem-solving ability, and relevant experience much more. The course may still be useful for learning, but the certificate itself usually isn’t.

If you can already build working projects, I’d focus on making a few polished ones and documenting what you learned. A portfolio, code samples, and the ability to explain your decisions will usually help more than a free completion certificate. You can take the course for the knowledge and simply leave the certificate off your résumé if it doesn’t carry much recognition.
