I'm building a 1440p gaming system around an RX 9070 XT and want to keep the complete platform until roughly 2030–2032 without replacing individual parts. I'm comparing two options: a $300 AM4 setup with a new Ryzen 7 5800X3D, ASRock B450M Steel Legend, and 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 in dual channel; or a $380 AM5 bundle with a new Ryzen 5 7500X3D, ASRock B850M motherboard, and 16GB (1x16GB) DDR5-6000 CL36 in single-DIMM configuration. Which option should provide better overall gaming performance and stability at 1440p over the long term?

The 5800X3D is still a strong gaming chip, and the dual-channel 16GB kit avoids the memory penalty of running one DDR5 module. If you will never upgrade the CPU, motherboard, or RAM, this is the cheaper and more balanced setup today. However, AM4 is already a dead-end platform, and 16GB may become restrictive before 2030. I’d only choose it if the lower cost matters more than having a usable upgrade path.
The claims that one DDR5 stick is inherently unstable or that DDR5 must always be run with two sticks are exaggerated. A single module can run normally at its rated settings, though dual-DIMM operation usually provides more memory bandwidth and better performance. Four DIMMs also do not create a true quad-channel setup on ordinary desktop platforms. Either option should be stable with a suitable motherboard BIOS and properly configured memory, but neither 16GB configuration is especially future-proof for a system intended to last until 2030–2032.
The AM5 option makes more sense if you truly plan to keep the platform for several years. The 7500X3D should offer comparable or better gaming performance, and AM5 gives you a future CPU upgrade path without replacing the motherboard and memory. Single-DIMM DDR5 generally works, but it can reduce performance compared with two matching sticks—often by a modest amount, especially when the RX 9070 XT is the limiting factor at 1440p. Adding a second matching 16GB stick later would be the ideal upgrade, although 32GB from the start would be preferable for a 2030-era build.

The main advantage of the AM5 choice is the platform longevity, not that single-channel memory is automatically equivalent to dual-channel memory. It should work normally, but two DIMMs would provide better bandwidth.
