I'm upgrading my two sons' gaming PCs to AM5 systems with RX 9070 GRE graphics cards. Each currently uses two 27-inch 1080p monitors. I'm planning to give each of them a new 27-inch 1440p IPS monitor with a 180–200Hz refresh rate as the primary gaming display, while keeping one of their existing 27-inch 1080p IPS monitors for Discord, browsers, YouTube, and other secondary tasks. Is there any major downside to using 1440p and 1080p monitors together? I'm mainly wondering whether the difference in resolution, pixel density, scaling, mouse movement, or window management becomes annoying in everyday use. I could buy matching 1440p monitors, but I'm not sure that extra expense is worthwhile for a gaming-and-secondary-display setup. Which combination would you choose: 1440p plus 1080p, or dual 1440p?

The biggest issues are usually with desktop layout rather than gaming. Icons or windows can occasionally behave oddly when an application switches to fullscreen, and a screenshot covering both displays will show the 1080p side at a different size. Images or video captured at 1440p may also need to be zoomed when viewed on the lower-resolution monitor. None of that is a strong reason to buy a second 1440p monitor unless you specifically want both screens to match.
A 27-inch 1440p monitor alongside a 27-inch 1080p display works perfectly well. You can adjust display scaling so text and interface elements feel closer in size. The main quirks are that the screens have different physical desktop heights, so moving the mouse across at the very top or bottom can feel slightly awkward. Dragging windows between them may also feel a little uneven, and full-desktop screenshots can look mismatched, but most people stop noticing after a short while. Matching 1440p screens would be nicer, but it isn’t essential for a primary gaming display and a secondary screen.
Mixed resolutions are fine, especially when the secondary monitor is just for chat, web pages, or video. One thing worth considering is orientation: a smaller 1080p monitor used vertically can be more practical for Discord and browsing than a wide side display. Color accuracy and brightness may differ more noticeably than resolution at first, but that usually matters less once you get used to it. If the existing monitor is still in good condition, I’d keep it and spend the money elsewhere.
That’s pretty much what I was thinking. It’s good to know the differences are mostly minor annoyances rather than a real usability problem.
