I'm considering moving from Windows 10 to Linux because support is ending, and I'd like advice on which distribution would suit my laptop. I tried Linux Mint around 2024, but I had problems with the NVIDIA graphics card. I wasn't always sure the GPU was being used, and Deep Rock Galactic had noticeable stutters whenever new effects appeared, such as bullets, thrown objects, or particles.
My main use is gaming through Steam, Minecraft, emulators, and other locally installed games. I also use Blockbench, Blender, FireAlpaca, and video-editing software. I'd prefer something that handles NVIDIA drivers and gaming reliably without requiring too much troubleshooting.
The laptop is an HP Pavilion Gaming with an Intel i5-10300H, 16 GB of RAM, a 512 GB SSD, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti with 4 GB of VRAM, and integrated Intel UHD graphics. Would Mint be worth trying again, or would Fedora, Nobara, Bazzite, CachyOS, or another distribution be a better fit?

CachyOS is also worth testing if you want something aimed at performance and gaming. It has worked well for other hybrid-laptop setups with NVIDIA graphics, though it may feel less familiar than Mint. Regardless of the distribution, test it from a live USB first and check suspend, external displays, GPU switching, audio, and your most-played games before committing.
Linux Mint is still one of the easiest general-purpose choices, but for a gaming-focused setup you could also consider Nobara or Bazzite. They come with more gaming-related configuration already handled. Fedora is another solid option, although NVIDIA drivers require more manual setup there. Your GTX 1650 Ti should be usable, but make sure the proprietary driver is installed and that games are actually launching on the NVIDIA GPU rather than the integrated graphics.
Fedora worked well for me after following a careful NVIDIA-driver installation guide. I’d stick to the distribution’s recommended driver method rather than adding random third-party repositories.
