I'm a mechanical and manufacturing engineer building a workstation for heavy CAD/CAM use, including SolidWorks, Mastercam, Fusion 360, NX toolpath generation, and some FEA simulations. I'm deciding between the Intel Core Ultra 7 270K and AMD Ryzen 9 9900X. Strong single-core performance is important for interactive CAD modeling, while CAM calculations and rendering also benefit from good multi-core performance. For professional manufacturing software, which CPU offers better real-world performance, stability, efficiency, and long-term value?

For most engineers, either processor should be capable. In business environments, the choice is often determined by the workstation vendor, support contracts, pricing, and what the company already standardizes on rather than a dramatic difference in day-to-day CAD performance. It’s worth checking benchmarks for the exact SolidWorks, Mastercam, Fusion 360, and NX tasks you use, since performance can vary considerably between applications.

That makes sense for company-provided workstations, but I’m an independent engineer buying this with my own money. Given that it’s specifically for CAD/CAM work, which of the 270K and 9900X would you personally choose?
