I'm using an RX 6700 XT, Ryzen 5 5600, and a 24-inch 1080p VA monitor. I usually max out the graphics settings, but games such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, and many other modern titles look either soft and blurry with anti-aliasing enabled or extremely shimmery with it disabled. I've already tried turning off effects like bloom, film grain, and other distracting post-processing options, and I don't use dynamic resolution.
Some darker games, such as the Batman trilogy, look fine, and Uncharted is also relatively clear. 2D games generally look the sharpest. I care more about image clarity than realistic effects, so this has become really frustrating. Could the VA monitor be contributing to the problem, and would moving to a 27-inch 1440p display help?

The monitor could definitely be part of it. Some VA panels have poor motion clarity and noticeable smearing, especially in darker transitions. That can make game movement look blurry even when the frame rate is high. A better-quality IPS display would usually have cleaner motion, while a 1440p monitor would also give you more pixel density and reduce the visibility of shimmering. It won’t completely fix poor anti-aliasing in individual games, though.
Your 6700 XT is capable of 1440p, and a 27-inch 1440p display would be a sensible upgrade for sharper overall image quality. Just make sure it has good motion handling rather than choosing based only on resolution. A poor VA panel can still smear at 1440p, so a well-reviewed IPS model may be the safer choice if clarity and motion detail matter most.
A lot of modern games rely heavily on temporal anti-aliasing, which often produces a soft image at 1080p. Turning it off exposes shimmering, while keeping it on creates blur. Try using the game’s highest-quality native anti-aliasing option, sharpening if available, and disable motion blur, film grain, chromatic aberration, and depth of field. Temporal upscaling can sometimes look better than the default AA, but it may reduce performance or introduce its own artifacts.

I’ve tried FSR before and wasn’t impressed. I’m hoping newer versions improve the reconstruction quality, but native rendering with good anti-aliasing still seems preferable when performance allows.
