I'm choosing between a 27-inch 1440p QD-OLED and a 27-inch 4K IPS monitor. In my country, the 1440p OLED models are often cheaper, and I'm comparing displays with the same 180Hz refresh rate. The 1440p OLED should offer higher frame rates, lower latency, stronger contrast, and better colors, while 4K would provide sharper text and image detail but require more GPU power. I'm also a software engineering student, so I'll be reading and writing text regularly. How noticeable is the text-clarity issue on a 27-inch QD-OLED, and would 1440p OLED still be the better overall choice?

The biggest reason to choose 4K IPS is text clarity. QD-OLED subpixel layouts can make small text look slightly fuzzy or show colored fringing, especially on white backgrounds. It isn’t necessarily unusable, but people who code or read documents for hours may notice it more than someone who mainly games. A 4K IPS display will look cleaner for text, while the OLED will be dramatically better for contrast, motion, and dark scenes.
A 1440p QD-OLED is probably the sensible compromise here. Just remember that 4K video and very small fonts won’t look quite as clean when scaled to 1440p, and OLED panels can be vulnerable to burn-in with static interfaces. Using a sensible brightness level, screen-off timers, and varied content can reduce that risk. Given your budget, desk space, and preference for high refresh rates, a 27-inch 1440p OLED seems more practical than a larger or faster 4K option.
For your hardware and gaming priorities, the 1440p QD-OLED sounds like the better fit. At 27 inches, 1440p is already fairly sharp, and you’ll have more GPU headroom for high settings and ray tracing. OLED’s contrast, near-instant response time, and lack of typical IPS ghosting are much more noticeable during gaming than the jump from 1440p to 4K. The main compromises are possible burn-in, limited brightness on some models, and weaker text rendering.
I made a similar upgrade and found moving to 1440p OLED far more impressive than simply moving from 1440p to 4K. For gaming, the OLED’s pixel response and image quality are immediately obvious. If possible, check the exact model in person and spend some time reading code or browser text on it before buying, since text clarity varies somewhat by panel and your sensitivity to it.
That’s the part I’m most unsure about. I’ll be coding regularly, but I also strongly prefer 180Hz and don’t want to sacrifice too much gaming performance for 4K.
