I keep hearing that engineering teams do not care enough about cloud spending, but I am not sure that is the right diagnosis. Engineers usually have dashboards for latency, errors, CPU, memory, and availability, yet they may have no idea whether a service costs $500 or $50,000 per month. How can teams expose cost information in a useful way and encourage better decisions without expecting every engineer to become a FinOps specialist?

Visibility helps, but leadership has to establish that cost is part of engineering ownership. A recurring cost review or FinOps sprint can get teams looking at their usage and identifying savings, without requiring everyone to become a specialist. Clear ownership matters too—shared account-level bills are easy for everyone to treat as someone else’s problem.
A monthly total by itself is not very useful. People respond better to changes tied to something they did, such as a deployment, a retry storm, an inefficient query, or a new environment. Development and testing environments also need to be included—assuming they are free can create a surprisingly large bill.
The best time to discuss cost is before an architecture is deployed. Adding a basic cost estimate and expected scaling assumptions to design reviews makes spending part of the decision instead of something discovered after a large bill. Showing cost deltas in CI/CD or service dashboards can then catch regressions quickly.
Engineers are much more likely to act when cost appears in the same dashboards they already use for operational metrics. A service-level monthly run rate, daily cost trend, and cost change after a deployment are more actionable than a finance report arriving weeks later. Assigning spending to the team or service that owns it also makes the number meaningful.
Cost is important, but it cannot always outrank reliability, security, or performance. If an application has strict latency or availability requirements, paying more may be justified. Engineers should understand the tradeoff and look for efficient ways to meet the requirement, rather than optimizing cost blindly.
